Battle Gaming

The New American Sport

Authored by David W. Graham
Photographs by Julieanna Davis, Amy Hutcheson

Dave Graham who started playing Dagorhir 27 years ago has put together a definitive work for the new player to the sport.  The book teaches the Warrior Code rule set that is very similar to the Dagorhir rules.  This allows the reader to quickly transfer what they have learned to Dagorhir battle gaming.

The book includes:

  • Forward by Brian Wiese, founder of Dagorhir
  • The history of Dagorhir and all of its spin off groups
  • Quick start guide to get new players started in this wonderful sport
  • Instructions on how to make a sword that will meet the Dagorhir weapons inspection requirements
  • Tips on how to improve your fighting skills
  • A selection of games to play
  • Game System comparison chart

Curious facts found in the book:

  • In 2004, Dagorhir Ragnarok overtook Amtgard Gathering of the Clans as the largest battle gaming event in the US.
  • When Dagorhir split in 2002, Belegarth took about half the membership.  Since that time the Dagorhir portion has grown at about three times the pace of the Belegarth portion.
  • Dagorhir players use far fewer thrusting swords than Amtgard players.  This is primarily due to the more stringent construction requirements of the push thrust standard in Dagorhir over the touch thrust standard in Amtgard.  But Amtgard players use almost no thrusting spears preferring slashing glaives instead. This is because two handed thrust in Amtgard have no extra damage effects (unlike Dagorhir), while two handed swings in Amtgard do twice the damage (like Dagorhir red weapons).
  • Many more …

This book is an excellent resource to any Dagorhir enthusiast.
